Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a generalized term used to describe a chronic deficiency in moisture or lubrication on the surface of the eye. This results in uncomfortable irritation, and sometimes inflammation of the tissues of the eyeball.

This syndrome is also known by the medical term keratitis sicca, xerophtalmia, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca when it specifically affects the cornea and conjunctiva.

Dry eyes can result from the eye not producing enough tears, or by the moisture evaporating from the eye at an abnormally fast rate. There is a wide variety of potential causes behind these symptoms, such as: part of the aging process or menopause, dry or dusty atmospheric conditions, a side-effect of certain medications or anti-histimines, contact lens usage, and more.

One popular treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome is artificial tears, or lubricating eye drops. These products (not to be confused with drops aimed at eliminating redness from eyes) moisturize the eyeball with an artificial solution that mimics the viscosity of natural tears.

There are a number of products available that can be used to moisten dry contact lenses, but it is important to note that not all artificial tears or lubricant eye drops can be used for this purpose. The formulation of certain brands of artificial tears is simply incompatible with the materials that hard and soft contact lenses are made from.

Contact lens wearers suffering from dry eyes can seek advice from their optometrist or ophthalmologist regarding the best treatment for their condition. Many will recommend a rewetting drop specifically formulated for lubricating eyes with contact lenses. In the United States, products intended for contact lens care must be approved by the FDA and labeled as such.

People who use eye drop products (such as artificial tears, red eye drops, lubricant eye drops, and contact lens rewetting drops) should be aware that most of these products include chemical preservatives in order to keep the products free of contamination from bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These fluids are typically approved by regulatory agencies before they can be sold in most jurisdictions, and most people have no objection to the inclusion of these various preservatives in eye drop products.

But others disagree, and suggest that substances such as benzalkonium chloride can be harmful with long-term usage in the eye. People who use eye drops may want to review these arguments and investigate their eye drop ingredients when making a purchasing decision.

Those with concerns about the ingredients of their eye drop products might choose to opt for the various preservative-free eye drop alternatives. Lubricating drops, artificial tears, and some medical drops are available in single-use vials or special bottles that eliminate the need for preservatives.
