Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a medical term of Latin origin meaning ‘dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva.’ This term describes an eye condition in which the eyes are abnormally dry due to either decreased tear production, or increased evaporation.
The condition is also known by the terms keratitis sicca, xerophthalmia, dry eye syndrome (DES), or dry eyes.
Prevalence of keratoconjunctivitis sicca increases with age. Dry eyes are also often associated with contact lens wearers, and people who have undergone LASIK laser eye surgery.
